EN 13432: 2001
The composability and biodegradability of materials used in packaging for materials are outlined in the European standard EN 13432: 2001. This standard, entitled requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation — Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging, describes the requirements that packaging materials must satisfy to be deemed biodegradable and compostable by European standards.
Manufacturing organizations and sectors that produce packaging materials must adhere to EN 13432. This standard guarantees that the materials meet specific environmental requirements and have undergone rigorous testing. It is consistent with initiatives to encourage sustainability and decrease the harm that waste packaging causes to the environment.
